“Lights, Camera, Action! Setting the Scene for Learning”: 4K Early Reading & Development Academy

July 31, 2015

1steps_4kSouth Carolina First Steps recently sponsored the week-long 4K Early Reading & Development Academy 2015, July 27-31, in Columbia, South Carolina. This year’s event was titled “Lights, Camera, Action! Setting the Scene for Learning” and was attended by over 450 4K teachers, assistants, and directors.

All Academy participants were from SC First Steps 4K: programs that were “permanently established by the SC Read to Succeed Act in 2014. The SC Child Early Reading Development and Education Program provides full-day four-year-old-kindergarten in 64 South Carolina school districts. Enrollment is offered at no cost to eligible children . . . SC First Steps [also] offers parents the opportunity to enroll their eligible children with more than 150 private, faith- and community- based preschool providers statewide.”

Over the course of the week, 4K teachers, assistants, and directors received tiered training for Conscious Discipline taught by nationally recognized trainers Jessica Flowers and Kim Hughes as well as Creative Curriculum taught by trainers Pat Joyner and Yasmine Daniel.  A few of the daily keynote trainers included Marianne Gibbs, Ed.D. and her Write out of the Box! Presentation; famed children’s musician “Mr. Al” Russo, M.Ed.; and math expert trainer, Ellen Mulligan, Ph.D.

The following 8 QC programs qualified for 4K expansion classrooms and attended the training: Abundant Blessings CDC, Children’s Academy, Learning Years CDC, Miss Eddie’s CDC, Miss Sally’s Learning center, Mother Goose CDC, Precious Little Angels, and Sunshine House #16.

Brenda Berry, director of Sunshine House #16 exclaimed, “The training week was wonderful! We all received a lot of useful information.  My 4K teacher felt like she received training that will really help her in her classroom.”

Quality Counts congratulates SC First Steps 4K Director Martha Strickland and her 4K coordination staff for a powerful week full of effective teaching practices!
