Week of the Young Child is an annual event sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC established Week of the Young Child in 1971 with the goal of “focus[ing] public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.”

This year’s Week of the Young Child was themed “Celebrating Our Youngest Learners!”
To celebrate Spartanburg County’s youngest learners, the second annual “Play in the Park” was held on Tuesday, April 21 for the children of the 3 and 4 year old classes currently participating in Quality Counts. There were more than 500 children in attendance! Each child received a goody bag with a special book inside and had the chance to run, play, sing, and dance while interacting with community volunteers.
A free family event, “Sing and Dance in the Park,” featuring the children’s band Mr. Nigel and Friends was also held on April 21st at Barnet Park. This event was open to the public and featured “spirit” tokens for the children and $1 Icees.
**Events were moved from their originally scheduled dates due to inclement weather.
